Dr. Lawrence N. Virgin

Professor
Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science

Lawrie Virgin has been at Duke University since 1988. Prior to that he was a student at Manchester (78-81), Cardiff (81-82), Illinois (82-83) and UCL (83-86) where he also spent two years as a post-doc. These pages contain information on his research interests. He also teaches a variety of classes in theoretical and applied mechanics including vibration and buckling. A good deal of this research involves experimental lab-based studies, and his research has been supported by the NSF, AFOSR, ONR, ARO and NASA. He has written two books: further details of Introduction to Experimental Nonlinear Dynamics can be found by clicking here, and by clicking on the image in the left column there can be found various additional resources related to this book, e.g., color graphics and videos. Further details of Vibration of Axially Loaded Structures can be found by clicking here. He has undertaken his fair share of administrative repsonsibilites including stints as Chair of the Engineering Faculty Council, Director of Graduate Studies and Departmental Chair. He is an avid supporter of Tottenham Hotspur and Duke football.

Reserach related to nonlinear dynamics is also conducted within the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the groups associated with Earl Dowell and Brian Mann.
